The drama is an adaptation of Xiao Ruse's novel Xie Luo (《缬罗》), which is a prequel to the novel The Legend of Pearl (《斛珠夫人》). While it retains the core premise of the "blind princess with foresight" and her relationship with the general, significant changes have been made.
- Source Material Length: The original novel Xie Luo is extremely short, with only about 27,000 words. The drama expands this into a 40-episode series, which necessitates a significant amount of new content and expanded storylines.
- Plot Expansion: The novel is a relatively brief tale. The drama greatly expands the political intrigue (权谋) and the "destined love" (宿命虐恋) elements to fill out its 40-episode run.
- Character Arc: In the original story, Ti Lan and Tang Qianzi's relationship is more straightforward. The drama intensifies the "forbidden love" and "obsessive second male lead" dynamics, particularly by expanding the role of the Second Prince Zhongxu and his obsession with Ti Lan due to her resemblance to his dead wife.
- Expanded Storyline: The drama adds more depth to the "blind singer" mythology, presenting it as a powerful and dangerous ability that is central to the plot, whereas in the novel, it serves more as a plot device.
Plot Overview
Set in the Nine Provinces, the story follows Ti Lan (Zhang Jingyi), the blind princess of Xiangnan. After a sudden palace coup shatters her peaceful life, she awakens a mysterious ability as a "Blind Singer" to foresee the future. She meets Tang Qianzi (Chen Zheyuan), a young general on a secret mission, and they are brought together by a twist of fate into an unexpected marriage, soon recognizing each other as soulmates. However, the ambitious Second Prince Zhongxu (Liang Yongqi), still grieving the loss of his wife, becomes obsessed with Ti Lan because of her striking resemblance to his deceased consort. As war engulfs the land, Ti Lan uses her gift of foresight to fight her predetermined tragic destiny alongside Tang Qianzi, defying fate in a time of chaos.
