Biography

Liu Xiening (Sally) first captured the public's attention as a K-pop trainee and member of the Korean girl group gugudan, before returning to China to compete on the hit survival show Produce Camp 2020. Finishing in 6th place, she debuted as a member of the限定女团 BonBon Girls 303. However, her enduring appeal comes from her successful transition from idol to actress. Initially dismissed as a "non-actor with a limited shelf life", Liu has steadily proven her doubters wrong, earning praise from influential producer Yu Zheng, who called her "unmatched in the industry". With her striking visuals and growing reputation for making the most of every role, she has become a compelling example of an idol who is slowly but surely building a serious acting career.

Breakthrough Role Liu's acting breakthrough came with her first leading role in the 2022 fantasy romance drama Night of Love (夜色倾心). However, it was her 2023 performance in the hit period drama Story of Kunning Palace (宁安如梦) that truly put her on the map as a serious actress. She followed this with a string of high-profile supporting roles that critics have called "effective配角" (effective supporting roles), including appearances in Destined (长风渡), The Double (墨雨云间), and Five Blessings (五福临门). Her ability to leave a lasting impression even with limited screen time has earned her a reputation as an actress who consistently delivers, leading to her first leading roles in major productions.

Public Perception Liu Xiening currently occupies a complex space in the Chinese entertainment industry. On one hand, she is widely praised for her visual appeal and undeniable stage presence. However, her public perception is far from universally positive. She has been criticized for "average" acting skills and a perceived lack of public recognition, with some综艺 appearances highlighting her relative anonymity among general audiences. Furthermore, her public image has also been affected by some controversies, such as reports of "怼粉" (clashing with fans). Despite these challenges, Liu continues to land leading roles in major projects, suggesting that the industry sees potential in her. Whether she can fully translate her idol popularity into lasting acting credibility remains an open question, but her trajectory — from dismissed idol to increasingly visible actress — is one that many are watching closely.
