Biography
Joseph Zeng (Zeng Shunxi) is a Chinese actor born on October 9, 1997, in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. He first gained attention as a member of the idol group Fresh Teen but soon transitioned into acting, debuting in 2015. Known for his charismatic screen presence and emotional range, Zeng has starred in several acclaimed dramas such as Ultimate Note, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, The Heaven Sword and the Dragon Saber, and Hi Venus. His versatility spans genres, from romance to fantasy and mystery, earning him a strong fanbase across Asia. With over 40 credits to his name, Joseph Zeng continues to rise as one of the most compelling young talents in Chinese television. Born Joseph Zeng Wei-hang in 1996 (or 1997) in Shenzhen, Zeng Shunxi first entered the entertainment industry as a member of the boy band Fresh Geek in 2014. After going solo in 2015, he pivoted to acting and quickly became one of the most prolific young actors of his generation. What sets him apart is his unusual ability to balance commercial appeal with critical respect — he has starred in multiple major IP adaptations, from The Legend of the Condor Heroes to The Lost Tomb, while also delivering a rare trifecta of three hit dramas (Meet Yourself, The Lost Tomb, and Mysterious Lotus Casebook) all scoring above 8.0 on Douban. With a combination of leading-man looks, solid acting chops, and a reputation for staying out of gossip, Zeng has become one of the most dependable and well-liked actors of the post-95 generation.
Breakthrough Role Zeng‘s breakthrough came in 2019 when he took on the iconic role of Zhang Wuji in the remake of Jin Yong’s classic The Legend of the Condor Heroes. At just 21 years old, he embodied the youthful, kind-hearted, and slightly naive martial arts hero with a sincerity that won over many viewers. He famously performed his own stunts — including a cliff-jumping scene that left crew members impressed by his dedication. The role earned him the Best Actor award in the online drama category at the 6th China TV Actors Awards. However, it was his 2023 performance as Fang Duobing in the hit wuxia mystery Mysterious Lotus Casebook that truly cemented his place in the industry. Playing a passionate, talkative young swordsman who dreams of justice, Zeng brought a warmth and comedic energy that made the character a fan favourite and significantly expanded his audience.
Public Perception Today, Zeng Shunxi is widely regarded as a “versatile young actor” with strong acting skills, a solid reputation, and genuine popularity. He has built a career on quality projects and consistent performance, earning him a reputation for being a reliable, low-drama presence in an industry often defined by controversy. His filmography includes a string of well-received dramas — The Lost Tomb, Heroes, Meet Yourself, Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty, and Mysterious Lotus Casebook — that showcase his range across genres. He has also ventured into music, collaborating with international indie artists and impressing audiences with his singing. Off-screen, he is known for his easygoing personality and emotional stability, though some observers note that despite his steady output and solid reputation, he has yet to achieve the explosive “top-tier” status that his body of work might suggest. Nonetheless, with a growing list of acclaimed projects and a loyal fanbase that eagerly anticipates each new release, Zeng Shunxi remains one of the most consistently compelling actors of his generation — a performer who lets his work, rather than his headlines, do the talking.
