Plot Overview

Set during the reign of Emperor Renzong in the Northern Song Dynasty, the series follows Zhan Zhao (played by Yang Yang), a fourth-ranked imperial sword-bearing guard of the imperial court. After receiving key evidence about a cold case left behind by an old friend, Zhan Zhao travels alone to Xiangzhou to uncover the truth, only to find himself pursued by assassins from all sides.

The conspiracy at the heart of the storm is orchestrated by the Prince of Xiangyang, who secretly colludes with the Western Xia regime, court officials, and underworld forces in a rebellion plot against the Song court. A martial arts master and man of principle, Zhan Zhao journeys south to search for the truth.

Along the way, he meets two unexpected companions. The first is Huo Linglong (played by Zhang Ruonan), a young woman from Linglong Villa who is strong-willed and daring. The second is Bai Yutang (played by Fang Yilun), a hot-blooded wandering hero known as the "White Jade Rat" for his bold, justice-driven actions.

As the trio joins forces, they must navigate a treacherous world in which shadowy forces manipulate both the court and the underworld. Moving from one perilous case to the next, they gradually uncover the full scale of the Prince's conspiracy, culminating in a final confrontation to restore justice.

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide

The 37-episode series employs a dual-narrative structure — weaving together Zhan Zhao's personal journey of self-discovery with the larger political intrigue that threatens the Northern Song court. The story is divided into three major story arcs.

Arc 1: A Shadow in the Night — The Lone Journey Begins (Episodes 1–12)

Synopsis Zhan Zhao, a respected imperial guard, receives a cryptic piece of evidence from a deceased friend pointing to a treason conspiracy orchestrated by the Prince of Xiangyang. Loyal to his duty and driven by a sense of justice, he sets off for Xiangzhou alone to investigate. But almost immediately, he finds himself hunted by assassins from both the court and the criminal underworld. His path crosses with Huo Linglong, who has run away from her family's attempt to arrange her marriage. Mistaking him for a thief at first, she gradually comes to realize his true identity. As Zhan Zhao becomes the target of a smear campaign, turning public opinion against him, his physical and moral endurance are put to the ultimate test. Key Story Beats

  • Zhan Zhao receives evidence of the Prince of Xiangyang's rebellion and resolves to investigate the case.
  • He travels to Xiangzhou, walking into a carefully laid trap as the Prince deploys multiple assassins to eliminate him.
  • He meets Huo Linglong when both become targets of the same enemies.
  • The Prince spreads rumors painting Zhan Zhao as a traitor, turning the people against him.
  • A pivotal action sequence sees Zhan Zhao captured and imprisoned while protecting civilians, setting the stage for his rescue.
  • His courage and resolve are forged in the fire of betrayal and isolation.

Arc 2: The Pact of Three — An Unlikely Alliance (Episodes 13–24)

Synopsis Just as Zhan Zhao is about to be overwhelmed by his enemies, Bai Yutang — a fiery, independent spirit who believes in settling scores with blood — appears just in time to rescue him. Initially, Bai Yutang distrusts anyone connected to the court, seeing them as part of the problem. But as he witnesses Zhan Zhao's unwavering integrity, the two martial arts masters develop a grudging mutual respect. Joined by Huo Linglong, the trio form an alliance to pool their talents and resources. Together, they navigate a web of interconnected cases that are all part of the Prince's grand scheme — from smuggling salt and manipulating imperial examinations to offering blood sacrifices and conspiring with enemy forces. Key Story Beats

  • Bai Yutang makes a dramatic entrance, rescuing Zhan Zhao at the moment of his greatest peril.
  • The initial tension between Zhan Zhao's court-aligned honor and Bai Yutang's outlaw ethics creates compelling character conflict.
  • A key scene forces the two to fight side by side, forging an unspoken bond of trust.
  • The trio's complementary strengths are established: Zhan Zhao's strategic mind, Bai Yutang's combat ferocity, and Huo Linglong's courage in growing into a true martial artist.
  • The trio connects the dots between multiple criminal cases, uncovering a conspiracy far larger than they expected.

Arc 3: The Final Stand — Justice Restored (Episodes 25–37)

Synopsis Having gathered sufficient evidence of the Prince of Xiangyang's crimes, the trio sets their sights on the ultimate target: the mastermind orchestrating everything from his stronghold in Xiangzhou. The four most powerful warriors under the Prince's command — the "Four Divine Lords" — stand in their way. As the trio brings their fight to the Prince's doorstep, each member is forced to confront the ultimate costs of justice. Exhausted, wounded, and having lost allies along the way, they must decide whether winning justice is worth the sacrifice. The series culminates in an epic, multi-stage battle that pushes every character to their limit — and beyond. Key Story Beats

  • The trio uncovers the full scope of the conspiracy and the forces behind it.
  • The team confronts the Prince's "Four Divine Lords" in a series of carefully staged battles.
  • Each team member's personal backstory pays off as they face the ghosts of their pasts.
  • The conspiracy is fully exposed, and the Prince's plans are destroyed.
  • Justice is restored to both the court and the martial world.
  • Final moments emphasize themes of growth and redemption, celebrating the bonds that the journey has forged. The series is produced by Daylight Entertainment and Youku, under producer Hou Hongliang and director Liu Hongyuan. It adapts the classic Three Heroes and Five Gallants legacy for a new generation, with a focus on hand-crafted, practical martial arts choreography — often described as "hand-rubbed wuxia" — that emphasizes authentic, grounded combat over CGI.
