The drama is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Fei Wo Si Cun, who also served as the screenwriter for the series. While the core characters, premise, and general story trajectory remain largely intact, the ending was significantly altered for the television adaptation.
- Ending Change: The novel's original ending is widely considered a tragedy (BE). The drama changed this to a definitive happy ending (HE) where the couple gives up the throne and lives peacefully together.
- Ending Detail: In the original novel, the couple survives but the ending is more open-ended. The drama provides a much more explicit and fully realized happy ending, including a detailed epilogue showing their life together.
- Plot Addition: The drama adds a significant amount of romantic development and comedic relief between the leads to balance the more tragic elements of the story.
- Character Detail: In the novel, Li Ni does not have a childhood nickname. The drama adds the nickname “A-Dao” (阿稻) for the male lead.
- Plot Adjustment: Some battle and action sequences were shortened or cut from the drama adaptation.
