The drama has been described by netizens as "only borrowing a shell" from the novel. The adaptation makes radical changes to the female lead's background and adds entirely new plot devices.

  • Character Arc: The novel's female lead Wei Rao was a noble daughter of the Cheng'an Bo Manor with a distinguished bloodline and her grandmother's protection. The drama erases this noble origin entirely, changing her into A Chou, a street orphan raised in poverty who works as a night-soil carrier.
  • Plot Addition: The drama adds an entirely new "real vs. fake heiress" (真假千金) dual-villainess setting where Tian Xiwei plays both roles. The novel has no such "identical faces" (同脸) or twin-sister device; this is a completely new creation for the drama.
  • Plot Restructuring: The drama cuts most of the novel's "inner-household scheming" (宅斗) elements, replacing them with a "real vs. fake heiress" battle and a mother-daughter emotional subplot that does not exist in the original work.
  • Plot Addition: The drama adds a "chasing wife crematorium" (追妻火葬场) arc where Lu Zhuo, after being presumed dead, returns to find Wei Rao preparing to remarry, triggering his desperate pursuit—a plotline not present in the novel.
  • Character Arc: The novel's male lead Lu Zhuo was a more passive character whose initial dislike of Wei Rao was based on her supposed "loose behavior." The drama changes his personality to be more calculating and suspicious, making his subsequent "falling in love" arc more dramatically satisfying.

Plot Overview

Adapted from Xiao Jiaren's novel of the same name, the drama tells the story of Wei Rao, a true noble daughter of the Cheng'an Bo Manor who was secretly swapped at birth and raised in poverty as a lowly street girl nicknamed "A Chou" (Dirty Ugly). To pay for her adoptive mother's medical treatment, she agrees to take the place of the fake heiress Jun Dai in a "chongxi" (marriage to ward off death) to the comatose heir of the Duke's manor, Lu Zhuo. When Lu Zhuo suddenly awakens on their wedding night, Wei Rao finds herself trapped between a suspicious husband who sees her as a scheming viper and a ruthless fake heiress determined to destroy her. Through wit and perseverance, she navigates the deadly intrigues of the Duke's household, uncovers the truth of her birth, and transforms from a bottom-tier night-soil carrier into the woman who stands beside her husband to defend their homeland on the border.
