Veil of Shadows

Plot Overview

In the ancient city of Luo'an, a series of grisly heart-extraction murders by a monster has thrown the populace into terror. Lu Wuyi (played by Ju Jingyi), the youngest nine-tailed fox of the mysterious organization Wu Xiang Yue (No-Phase Moon), infiltrates the Wei Manor undercover to hunt down the traitorous and powerful demon Xiao Wei—who has stolen the divine power of the Dragon God. At the same time, Wu Shiguang (played by Zeng Shunxi), a lone exorcist who has disguised himself as a human using the art of "painting skin" and carries a deep-seated blood feud, sneaks into the same manor with his own agenda.

But these are not the only players in this deadly game. Wu Wangyan (played by Chen Duling), Lu Wuyi's elder sister and the High Priestess of the nine-tailed fox clan — outwardly gentle yet inwardly calculating — has also arrived. Additionally, the mysterious young exorcist Ji Ling (played by Tian Jiarui) of the Shi Lin Sect (Servant of the Scale) comes to capture the monster, his innocent exterior concealing a secret of great significance.

All four are drawn by the allure of Xiao Wei's Dragon God power—each with their own hidden motives, some seeking to protect, others to destroy. As they pursue the truth about Xiao Wei and the Dragon God's power, they find themselves entangled in a web of alliances and betrayals, gradually uncovering secrets far more terrifying than any monster. Lurking in the shadows is the ultimate evil: Jiu Ying, the king of all demons, whose conspiracy threatens to plunge the entire world into chaos.

The series uses four relationship dynamics—youthful passion, mature devotion, sisterly bonds, and brotherhood—to explore profound questions: Who am I? Why do I exist? Beneath the painted skin lies a timeless pursuit of truth, salvation, and the eternal question of love.

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide

The 29-episode series follows the journey of its four protagonists as they navigate the treacherous world of gods, demons, and humans, uncovering layer upon layer of secrets that ultimately force them to confront their own identities and make impossible choices.

Arc 1: The Hundred-Faced Ambush — Intrigue at the Wei Manor (Episodes 1–10)

Synopsis The series opens with the mysterious "heart-extraction monster" terrorizing Luo'an. Lu Wuyi, Wu Shiguang, Wu Wangyan, and Ji Ling, each with their own hidden agendas and disguises, infiltrate the Wei Manor, where a grand wedding is set to take place—an event that they believe will lure the monster out. Key Story Beats

  • Wu Shiguang disguises himself as the groom Wei Qing using the art of "painting skin" — a technique that allows him to wear another's identity like a second face. Lu Wuyi witnesses this and immediately sends a secret message to her elder sister Wu Wangyan, warning her to be cautious.
  • On the night of October 26th, the wedding unfolds as planned. Ji Ling and another exorcist named Li Jie sneak into the manor. Inside the bridal chamber, the false groom Wu Shiguang and the false bride Wu Wangyan confront each other, instantly seeing through each other's disguises. A fierce battle erupts—Wu Shiguang wielding a long spear, Wu Wangyan countering with a flexible sword.
  • A mysterious woman's scream pierces the night. Wu Shiguang, Ji Ling, and Li Jie rush toward the sound, finding a guest named Li Mao dead of heart extraction in a side room. In his hand is a slip of paper bearing the words "Wei Miao Ge" (Wei's Marvelous Pavilion).
  • The group pursues a fox shadow into the weaving pavilion, where a trap is sprung. But ice shatters the net, and the fox escapes, dashing into the weaving pavilion. Wu Shiguang chases after it, only to find several people already inside: the bride Yu Shengwei, the steward Luo Wei, and Wei's cousin Liu Weixue.
  • As the wedding night ends in chaos, a horrifying discovery is made: Xu's torso is found behind the ancestral temple, confirming the monster is still at large. The most terrifying secret, however, remains hidden beneath the very ground of Wei Manor—and the only one who knows it is the seemingly fragile madam of the estate, who is not as weak as she appears.
  • The four protagonists realize they cannot solve the puzzle alone. They begin to form an uneasy alliance—suspecting each other, testing each other, yet forced to cooperate. One thing becomes certain: the monster resides somewhere in the shadows of Wei Manor, and its true target may be far more than just hearts. This arc establishes the series' core premise — a locked-room mystery within a grand manor — and sets the stage for the larger conflict to come. The visual aesthetic, described as "pause-and-it-becomes-a-wallpaper," immerses viewers in a world of opulent yet dangerous beauty.

Arc 2: Beneath the Painted Skin — The Search for Truth (Episodes 11–20)

Synopsis As the alliance deepens, the protagonists uncover more of the world beyond Wei Manor. They venture into the desert abyss of Shang Xu Sha Yuan (Mourning Ruins Desert Abyss), where they uncover the truth about the five great demon lords who once received the Dragon God's blessing. They also journey to the mysterious Long Shen Miao (Dragon God Temple), where the statue of the Dragon God holds secrets waiting to be unraveled. Xiao Wei, the figure they have all been searching for, begins to emerge from the shadows—but the truth about this character is far more complicated than anyone imagined. Key Story Beats

  • The protagonists learn that five great demon lords once received the blessing of the Dragon God. Now, having betrayed that trust, they wield the sacred power to wreak havoc upon the mortal realm.
  • The group enters the Mourning Ruins Desert Abyss—a vast, treacherous desert landscape recreated in a 9,000-square-meter studio with over ten tons of sand—to uncover the first major piece of the puzzle.
  • At the Dragon God Temple, a massive set built around an artificial lake with a grand staircase and a functioning dock, they discover ancient inscriptions that hint at a terrible curse binding the Dragon God's power to the fate of all demons.
  • Xiao Wei's identity is revealed, but the revelation raises more questions than answers. Who exactly is this renegade demon, and why did she steal the Dragon God's power?
  • Wu Shiguang's blood feud is gradually unveiled, tying his personal tragedy to the larger conspiracy surrounding the Dragon God. Ji Ling's mysterious background also comes into focus—he is not merely an exorcist but something far more significant. This arc expands the story beyond the enclosed Wei Manor into a broader mythological landscape, deepening both the external mystery and the internal conflicts of the characters. The desert and temple sequences showcase the series' commitment to large-scale practical sets and immersive world-building.

Arc 3: To Save a World — The Final Confrontation and Sacrifice (Episodes 21–29)

Synopsis The final arc pulls the protagonists from the realm of gods and monsters into the battlefield of the heart. As the conspiracy of Jiu Ying, the king of all demons, is fully revealed, the four heroes must make impossible choices. Their loves and friendships are tested to the breaking point as they realize that defeating Jiu Ying may require the ultimate sacrifice. Key Story Beats

  • The catastrophic drought that was prophesied descends upon the land. As crops fail and people starve, the need to confront Jiu Ying grows urgent.
  • All four protagonists are forced to confront the truth about their own identities. Who are they really? Are their memories real or fabricated? The series explores the profound question of selfhood as each character undergoes a psychological deconstruction and reconstruction.
  • The Dragon God's power, once a source of greed and ambition, now becomes the only hope for salvation. But wielding it comes at a terrible cost.
  • Relationships that have developed over the course of the story—romantic bonds between certain pairings, sisterly ties between Lu Wuyi and Wu Wangyan, brotherhood among the exorcists—are pushed to their breaking point.
  • To kill Jiu Ying and restore balance to the world, the four protagonists must make an agonizing choice: sacrifice love, sacrifice friendship, or even sacrifice their own lives. The battle between "saving one" versus "saving all" becomes the emotional core of the climax.
  • The final battle against Jiu Ying is both physical and spiritual, as the heroes must confront not only the demon king but also the darkness within themselves. The resolution is bittersweet—faithfulness to the story's tragic undertones while offering a glimmer of hope for what lies beyond the painted skin. This arc delivers on the series' promise of "everyone is destined for a tragic ending" while exploring the eternal themes of love, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be human (or demon). The finale leaves viewers with the haunting question: beneath every painted skin, is there a soul worth saving?
