The Prisoner of Beauty (折腰)
Plot Overview
Adapted from Penglaike’s novel of the same name, the story takes place in a fictionalized setting inspired by China's Spring and Autumn period. Xiao Qiao, a clever and resourceful young woman from the Qiao family, is forced into a political marriage with Wei Shao, the formidable and powerful lord of the Wei family, to end a bloody feud between their two clans. Fourteen years ago, Xiao Qiao's grandfather retreated on the battlefield, leading to the deaths of Wei Shao’s grandfather, father, and brother. Now seeking peace for his people, Wei Shao agrees to the marriage, but his deep hatred for the Qiao family threatens to destroy the union before it can begin. Initially locked in a tense marriage of convenience, Xiao Qiao and Wei Shao slowly navigate their animosity, grudging respect, fierce trials, and political intrigue, gradually transforming enmity into understanding and fierce love as they eventually join forces to protect their kingdom and its people.
