While the original novel is known for its tragic BE ending (where the female lead dies of illness and the leads miss each other), the drama changes this. In the drama, after years apart, the leads reunite on the battlefield and ultimately join forces to fight for their country. The drama is considered a heavy adaptation of Ling Xi’s original novel. It retains the core characters and the initial “forced marriage” setup but makes significant changes to the plot, character arcs, and ending.
- Ending Change: The novel has a tragic BE ending where Ye Pingjun kills Jiang Xueting and dies of illness herself, ultimately missing Yu Changxuan. The drama changes this to a Happy Ending (HE) where the leads reunite on the battlefield and join the revolution together.
- Plot Addition: The drama adds a wedding scene for the main couple that does not exist in the original novel.
- Thematic Expansion: The drama significantly expands the “family and country” (家国) themes beyond the novel’s focus on romance and melodrama, adding elements like the Mei Agency infiltration, traitors in the Yu family army, and underground party threads.
- Plot Adjustment: The drama streamlines and adjusts the novel’s overly melodramatic plot points to create a more coherent narrative.
- Character Arc: The novel’s female lead is portrayed more as a victim of power struggles. The drama gives her more agency, portraying her as a woman who grows from seeking survival to becoming a revolutionary.
Plot Overview
Set in the 1920s during the warlord era, the story follows Ye Pingjun (Xu Ruohan), a poor female student who goes to work at the Xiangxi Guild Hall to earn money for her mother’s medical treatment. On her first day, she is falsely accused of attempting to assassinate the fifth young master of the Yu family, Yu Changxuan (Cheng Lei). To prove her innocence, she makes a ten-day bet with him to find the real culprit. Yu Changxuan pretends to pursue her to conceal his military maneuvers but gradually develops real feelings. With the intervention of her childhood friend Jiang Xueting (Liu Dongqin) and the wealthy heiress Tao Ziyi (Guo Yuxin), they are forced to marry. After her mother’s tragic death, Ye Pingjun manages to escape. Years later, they reunite on the battlefield, having both dedicated themselves to the revolution, and join forces to fight for their country.
