The Epoch of Miyu

Plot Overview

Xu Miyu was once the envy of everyone around her—a wealthy and glamorous housewife living in a seemingly perfect marriage. But on her tenth wedding anniversary, her world is brutally shattered when she discovers her husband has been having an affair with her own friend.

Rather than swallow her pride, Miyu makes a clean break: she divorces decisively, leaves without a cent, and chooses to start her life over from zero. But after a decade away from the workforce, the world is no longer welcoming to a thirty-something divorcee with nothing but outdated skills. Desperate and drowning in debt, she ends up taking the only job she can find—a housekeeper at the prestigious Purong Hotel (浦荣饭店).

At the same time, Ji Feng—a brilliant, exacting hotel manager and a familiar face from Miyu's past—returns to Shanghai to take over as Purong's new general manager. Cold, meticulous, and running from wounds of his own, he is the last person Miyu expects to encounter in her newfound misery.

What begins as an awkward reunion between two proud individuals reluctantly sharing the same ground soon evolves into something far more powerful. When internal corruption and mismanagement threaten to destroy Purong Hotel from within, Miyu and Ji Feng find themselves on the same side. He needs sharp, trustworthy allies to clean house; she needs opportunities to prove her worth. Together, they wage a quiet war against graft and inefficiency, their professional partnership deepening into an alliance of mutual respect—and, eventually, into a love that neither expected.

"The Epoch of Miyu" is not merely a story about love, but a story about rebuilding: a woman who refused to be defined by her divorce reclaims her career, her dignity, and her sense of self. With grounded workplace realism and an unflinchingly mature portrayal of adult romance, the series charts Miyu's transformation from a discarded housewife to a top sales professional—and the quiet, steadfast partnership with the man who sees her for who she truly is.

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide

The 38-episode series follows Xu Miyu's journey from domestic life to professional reinvention, unfolding across five major story arcs.

Arc 1: The Perfect Marriage Crumbles (Episodes 1–8)

Synopsis Xu Miyu has spent ten years building a picture-perfect life as the wife of entrepreneur Nie Yucheng—financial comfort, social status, the appearance of happiness. But on the day of their tenth anniversary, she stumbles upon the truth: her husband has been sleeping with none other than her own friend, Lu Zhenzhen. Miyu returns to Shanghai determined to preserve her marriage, but a series of humiliations forces her to confront the reality that she has been submissive and self-effacing for years, losing herself entirely in her role as a wife. When she finally discovers that Nie Yucheng has been secretly transferring money to Lu Zhenzhen's obstetric appointments, she moves from heartbreak to cold calculation. She consults a lawyer, gathers evidence, and publicly exposes both his embezzlement and Zhenzhen's pregnancy at a company celebration. Yet even in victory, she is powerless: her family urges her to stay for financial security, and she finds herself homeless, indebted, and equipped with nothing but a decade-old diploma. After her sister-in-law tries to trick her into signing fraudulent liability documents, Miyu realizes she has no choice but to survive on her own. Key Story Beats

  • Miyu discovers the affair during a surprise trip abroad and returns to Shanghai in denial.
  • She collects evidence of infidelity and embezzlement, then makes a dramatic, public exit from her marriage.
  • Her family pressures her to reconcile, revealing how trapped she truly is.
  • After signing the divorce papers and walking away penniless, Miyu must face the most terrifying question of all: who is she without her husband? This arc establishes Miyu's pain and desperation while laying the groundwork for her eventual transformation. She leaves the marriage with nothing—no home, no job, no identity—but also with the first stirrings of a long-dormant resolve.

Arc 2: From Housewife to Housekeeper (Episodes 9–16)

Synopsis With nowhere else to go, Miyu takes a job as a room attendant at Purong Hotel. It is humiliating work for a woman accustomed to being served, but she has no other options. To make matters worse, the hotel's new general manager is none other than Ji Feng—the same man who subtly tipped her off to her husband's affair abroad. Ji Feng has returned to Purong not for nostalgia but for war. He discovers deep-rooted corruption, embezzlement, and entrenched interests running through the hotel's management. His predecessor and his allies, including the scheming General Manager Zhang (张彩露), do everything in their power to obstruct him—and Miyu, as his quiet ally, becomes a target of their cruelty. But Miyu's decade of managing a household, mediating family tensions, and surviving a toxic marriage has sharpened her in ways she never recognized. She learns the hotel business from the ground up: cleaning rooms, handling guests, understanding operations. When Zhang frames her for theft, she methodically clears her own name. When a VIP guest complains, her polished English and grace under pressure astonish everyone—including Ji Feng. Key Story Beats

  • Miyu starts from the bottom—scrubbing floors and changing sheets—and endures the daily humiliations of being looked down upon.
  • Ji Feng notices her competence but remains distant, guarding his own secrets.
  • Miyu accidentally overhears key evidence of embezzlement and passes it to Ji Feng, becoming his clandestine informant.
  • When Zhang frames her, Miyu gathers counter-evidence, clearing her name while exposing Zhang's schemes. This arc focuses on the brutal realities of re-entering the workforce after a long absence, and on the quiet, mutually suspicious partnership forming between two guarded people.

Arc 3: Rising Through the Ranks (Episodes 17–25)

Synopsis As Ji Feng gradually roots out corruption at Purong, he transfers Miyu to the sales department—a vote of confidence that shocks everyone, including Miyu herself. There, she must prove that she is more than Ji Feng's protégé, navigating a male-dominated field where clients routinely dismiss and underestimate her. Using the emotional intelligence and resilience she developed during her marriage, Miyu begins to excel. She lands her first major accounts through sheer persistence, relying on no one's help. Meanwhile, her ex-husband Nie Yucheng, now facing legal trouble for embezzlement, approaches her under the guise of repayment but actually seeks to manipulate her into helping him—a scheme Lu Zhenzhen tries to thwart in her own selfish way. Meanwhile, Zhenzhen, now out for revenge after Nie Yucheng abandoned her, transfers to Purong's sales department to compete directly with Miyu, setting up a dramatic workplace rivalry. Key Story Beats

  • Miyu transfers to sales and faces widespread condescension from colleagues and clients alike.
  • She secures her first major contracts through her own grit and strategic thinking.
  • Nie Yucheng returns, attempting to use Miyu as an unwitting pawn in his failing business.
  • Lu Zhenzhen, now pregnant with Nie Yucheng's child and furious at being abandoned, joins Purong's sales team to compete directly with Miyu, intensifying their professional and personal feud. This arc showcases Miyu's growing independence and competence while reintroducing the antagonistic figures from her past—now as direct workplace rivals rather than family members.

Arc 4: The Summit and the Fallout (Episodes 26–32)

Synopsis The stakes escalate when Purong Hotel wins the bidding to host an international industry summit—the kind of event that could cement its reputation as a world-class venue. Leading the preparations falls to Miyu, who must coordinate every detail, from VIP accommodations to security protocols. It is the biggest professional challenge of her life. Lu Zhenzhen, consumed by jealousy, attempts to sabotage her. She plants false evidence to frame Miyu for leaking sensitive client information, leading to a crisis of trust between Miyu and Ji Feng. Meanwhile, Nie Yucheng's mounting financial troubles force him to pressure both women in increasingly desperate ways. Miyu navigates the chaos with characteristic composure, uncovering Zhenzhen's scheme and exposing it publicly. The summit proceeds flawlessly, and Purong Hotel emerges as a Shanghai landmark. But the victory comes at a cost: Miyu's relationship with Ji Feng has been tested to its limits, and both must decide what they truly want from each other. Key Story Beats

  • Purong wins hosting rights for a major summit; Miyu is placed in charge.
  • Lu Zhenzhen frames Miyu for data leaks, causing professional turmoil.
  • Miyu uncovers the truth, clears her name, and publicly exposes Zhenzhen's manipulation.
  • The summit succeeds, elevating Purong's status—but leaving Miyu and Ji Feng emotionally exhausted and uncertain. This arc is the climax of the workplace narrative and the turning point for the central romance: having faced their greatest external threats, the characters must now confront their internal ones.

Arc 5: A Second Beginning (Episodes 33–38)

Synopsis With the summit behind them, Ji Feng finds himself forced to confront his own past. He has been running from a previous engagement—a fiancée who abandoned him years ago—and the wounds have left him wary of emotional commitment. When that ex-fiancée unexpectedly resurfaces, Miyu must decide whether Ji Feng is truly ready to move forward, and whether she is willing to risk her hard-won independence for a love that may not be entirely stable. Rather than fall into melodrama, the finale of "The Epoch of Miyu" offers something rarer: an honest, adult negotiation between two people who have both been hurt before. They speak not of grand gestures but of compatibility, of timing, of the slow work of mutual trust. By the end, Ji Feng and Miyu choose each other—not out of desperation or fantasy, but with the clear-eyed awareness that they are better together than apart. Miyu's transformation is complete. She has become a top sales professional, financially independent, and emotionally whole—no longer defined by her divorce, but by the woman she has built herself into. As the series closes, Purong Hotel stands as a new city landmark, and Miyu stands on her own two feet, with Ji Feng beside her by choice rather than by need. Key Story Beats

  • Ji Feng's past engagement resurfaces, threatening the stability of his relationship with Miyu.
  • Miyu refuses to compete for a man; she gives him space to resolve his own issues.
  • Nie Yucheng receives his legal comeuppance; Lu Zhenzhen faces the consequences of her actions.
  • Ji Feng returns to Miyu—not to plead, but to choose her openly and clearly.
  • The finale shows Miyu thriving professionally and personally, having completed her arc from discarded wife to self-sufficient woman. This arc resolves both the romantic and professional threads, emphasizing that the story was never about a prince saving a damsel, but about two people who save themselves and then find each other.
