Plot Overview

Shen Xifan (played by Xu Ruohan) is a hotel housekeeping manager suffering from insomnia and migraines following the end of a difficult relationship. At her family‘s suggestion, she visits a nearby traditional Chinese medicine clinic, where she meets He Suye (played by Zhang Linghe), a warm and gentle doctor assigned to her care. Their relationship begins strictly professionally, but deepens as they discover they live in the same neighborhood and frequently cross paths. Both having been hurt by past relationships, they slowly learn to open their hearts again. He Suye’s dedication to traditional Chinese medicine and his commitment to his career inspire Shen Xifan to pursue her own aspirations. Through daily, unforced encounters, they heal one another and find a love “scented with the fragrance of herbal medicine”. Adapted from the web novel “Loving You, Is the Best Thing I’ll Ever Do” by Sheng Li, “The Best Thing“ is a gentle, healing romance about two wounded individuals rediscovering love and purpose through quiet moments of connection.

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide

The 28-episode series is structured around the growing relationship between Shen Xifan and He Suye. It can be divided into three main story arcs.

Arc 1: The Reluctant Patient — An Unexpected Encounter (Episodes 1–8)

Synopsis Struggling with sleeplessness and tension headaches after her breakup, Shen Xifan reluctantly visits a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic at her family’s urging. He Suye, the gentle doctor assigned to her, determines her pulse and prescribes herbal remedies for her condition. However, Shen Xifan‘s demanding schedule causes her to repeatedly forget her medicine, much to He Suye’s chagrin. He takes it upon himself to remind her gently. Their dynamic begins to shift when they realize they live within the same neighborhood, leading to unplanned encounters outside the clinic—at grocery runs, on the street, and during quiet walks. Initial impressions soften, and the guardedness between them begins to thaw, setting the stage for a connection neither of them expected.

Arc 2: Opening Hearts — Learning to Trust (Episodes 9–20)

Synopsis As their paths cross more and more frequently, the once strictly professional relationship deepens into genuine friendship. He Suye‘s dedication to his patients and his calm, attentive demeanor begin to chip away at Shen Xifan’s emotional walls. Having been hurt before, she is cautious about romance, but He Suye‘s constant, reassuring presence makes her feel safe. Meanwhile, He Suye is quietly inspired by Shen Xifan’s resilience and her quiet determination. Flashbacks reveal He Suye‘s own past heartbreak, explaining why he is similarly guarded. They begin to support each other through workplace pressures, family obligations, and emotional lows, slowly rebuilding their capacity to trust.

Arc 3: Healing and Love — Choosing Each Other (Episodes 21–28)

Synopsis After weeks of care, sincere conversations, and mutual support, the lingering awkwardness between He Suye and Shen Xifan gives way to an open and honest relationship. They become a couple, with He Suye‘s herbal remedies no longer necessary for Shen Xifan to sleep well—his presence itself has become her best medicine. He Suye officially introduces Shen Xifan to his grandmother, and the family acceptance they both feared turns out to be easier than expected. On the career front, He Suye encourages Shen Xifan to apply for a long-desired overseas training program and promises to wait for her, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to both her personal growth and their relationship. The final episodes show them learning to love without reservations, proving that for two people who have been wounded, finding each other is truly “the best thing.”
