The Advisors Alliance (大军师司马懿之军师联盟)

The Advisors Alliance is a two-part television series chronicling the life of Sima Yi, a government official and military strategist during the late Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period of China. Once a cowardly bookworm who broke his own legs to avoid serving the legendary warlord Cao Cao, Sima Yi (Wu Xiubo) is forced back into political life when his family is threatened. After he catches Cao Cao's attention with his “hawk-like stare and wolf-like gait,” he is conscripted as an official, plunging headlong into the Cao family’s turbulent internal succession struggle. Using his cunning strategies, Sima Yi helps Cao Pi (Li Chen) outmaneuver his brother Cao Zhi and secure the position of heir. Serving under the newly crowned Emperor Cao Pi, he spearheads sweeping reforms, eliminating aristocratic cliques and cementing the stability of the Wei dynasty. Over the course of the series, Sima Yi navigates court intrigues, military campaigns, and legendary rivalries—including an epic strategic battle of wits against his nemesis, the brilliant Shu strategist Zhuge Liang. After decades of service and survival in the treacherous corridors of power, Sima Yi finally takes his revenge, silencing his rivals and laying the foundation for the unification of China.

This 86-episode drama is split into two seasons: The Advisors Alliance (Part 1, episodes 1–42) and its sequel Growling Tiger, Roaring Dragon (Part 2, episodes 43–86, 44 episodes). The series follows Sima Yi’s journey from a minor scholar to a powerful regent, with four major story arcs.

• Act 1: Forced into Service (The Advisors Alliance, Eps 1 – 13 approx.): Sima Yi, a reclusive scholar who breaks his own legs to avoid conscription, is cornered when his family falls into danger. Cao Cao recruits Sima Yi to serve in his court after sensing his hidden ambition. Reluctantly entering the political arena, Sima Yi soon finds himself caught in the crossfire between Cao Cao's sons, Cao Pi and Cao Zhi, as their rivalry for succession escalates.
• Act 2: The Succession War (The Advisors Alliance, Eps 14 – 29 approx.): Sima Yi forms a strategic alliance with the underdog Cao Pi and helps him survive his father’s brutal tests. Meanwhile, Cao Zhi is backed by the brilliant but arrogant advisor Yang Xiu. Sima Yi and Yang Xiu engage in a series of intellectual duels, culminating in Yang Xiu’s execution. Sima Yi finally secures the heir title for Cao Pi, setting the stage for a new era under Emperor Cao Pi.
• Act 3: Reforms, Court Intrigue & Banished (The Advisors Alliance, Eps 30 – 42): After Cao Pi ascends the throne, Sima Yi introduces revolutionary reforms and builds a system of governance, but he makes powerful enemies within the noble clans. Plots are hatched to separate him from the emperor. Although his strategic counsel is critical to the stability of the state, jealous rivals ultimately drive a wedge between them, and Sima Yi is banished from the capital.
• Act 4: Return, Rivalry with Zhuge Liang & Ultimate Power (Growling Tiger, Roaring Dragon, Eps 43 – 86): Recalled to protect the state from the Shu-Han incursions, Sima Yi confronts his greatest adversary, Zhuge Liang, in a brilliant strategic battle of wits. Sima Yi endures humiliation to secure victory. After the death of Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi consolidates power by eliminating his political enemies, finally silencing Cao Shuang, who controlled the government for a decade, in a bloody coup.
