The drama is widely considered a heavy adaptation (魔改) of the original novel, with many fans expressing disappointment over the significant changes made to the story and characters.
- Opening Scene Change: In the novel, the female lead Jiang Si does not die at the hands of the male lead. The drama added a shocking opening scene where Yu Jin kills Jiang Si with an arrow through the heart to create dramatic tension.
- Character Arc - Male Lead's Background: In the novel, Yu Jin had known and loved Jiang Si since childhood, making their past-life misunderstandings and present-life romance more natural. The drama changed this so that he does not know her initially, and instead approaches her with suspicion, suspecting she might be an enemy spy.
- Character Arc - Female Lead's Abilities: The novel's Jiang Si is a strong, cunning, and ruthless heroine who meticulously plans her revenge. The drama significantly weakens her character, portraying her as more passive and less intelligent, with many of her proactive schemes removed.
- Plot Deletion - Key Investigation: The novel features a complex subplot where Jiang Si coldly observes her brother's murder to catch the culprit, personally sets a fire, and kills the perpetrator herself. The drama completely rewrites this storyline, simplifying it into a much less impactful sequence.
- Character Arc - Supporting Characters: The novel's brilliant child prodigy Zhen Heng and his father (an investigator) play significant roles. The drama completely removes these characters, with their investigative functions absorbed by other roles or omitted entirely. Additionally, the character of Qi Wang Yu Zhang is drastically changed from a cunning villain in the novel to a more benevolent figure in the drama.
