(subject to change as the drama is still in production). The drama remains faithful to the novel's core "revenge and conspiracy" storyline. However, there have been significant controversies regarding the adaptation, with some sources claiming the drama has been adapted into a "male lead-centered" framework, potentially reducing the female lead's screen time and character development compared to the original novel.
- Plot Restructuring: The original novel featured a dual-protagonist storyline with both male and female leads having complete revenge and growth arcs. The drama is reportedly restructured into a male lead-centered framework, potentially compressing the female lead's role.
- Character Arc: The male lead Zhang Linghe will play two roles—the gentle crown prince Song Ling and the ruthless minister Ye Tingyan. This "one actor, two roles" setup is a major feature of the drama adaptation.
- Plot Addition: The drama emphasizes the "disguised revenge" and "mistaken betrayal" plotlines, with some details of the conspiracy and revenge expanded compared to the novel.
- Character Arc: The female lead Su Luowei's role in the drama may differ from the original novel, with some reports suggesting the female lead is a "supporting role", though this has not been officially confirmed.
Plot Overview
During the third year of the Tianshou era, the beloved Crown Prince Song Ling (Zhang Linghe) is assassinated in a case known as the "Ci Tang" (Assassination of the Prince). His childhood sweetheart, Su Luowei (Lu Yuxiao), the daughter of the prime minister, marries his younger brother Song Lan to uncover the truth behind his death. She soon discovers that Song Lan was the mastermind behind the assassination. To take revenge, she decides to use the newly returned imperial official Ye Tingyan—unaware that he is none other than her first love, the prince who survived and is now disguised as a powerful minister. Mistaking her for a betrayer, he returns with a heart full of hatred. From suspicion and mutual exploitation to eventual alliance, they work together to bring down the tyrant, clear the old case, and fulfill their shared youthful dream of a peaceful and prosperous nation.
