Plot Overview
Set against the backdrop of China’s Reform and Opening-up in the early 1980s, the story follows Lu Yongfu (Yu Zhen), a passionate but aimless son of a military cadre, and Chen Sufen (Hu Ke), a down-to-earth girl from a neighboring shantytown. Their fates intertwine after a firecracker Yongfu sets off accidentally burns down Sufen’s kitchen. Over the following decade, they ride the waves of China’s economic boom—navigating business ventures from cigarette trading to real estate, enduring repeated failures and bitter misunderstandings. Through it all, their bond is tested, broken, and ultimately rebuilt, as they learn that true happiness lies not in wealth, but in family, integrity, and the strength to start over.

The drama is adapted from the novel Hunzi (《混子》) by Liu Jie. The core characters and central relationship are preserved, but several key plot points were altered for television.
- Plot Expansion: A significant subplot involving a "small porcelain vase" that becomes a national treasure and sparks a nationwide "treasure-hunting craze" was added to the drama. This subplot drives much of the final arc’s conflict.
- Character Adjustment: The novel's protagonist was based on the author's own life experiences. The drama, through screenwriter Lü Hong’s adaptation, made the story more comedic and more贴近 (relatable to) ordinary people’s lives.

- Act 2: Young Entrepreneurs & Broken Trust (Episodes 9-16 approx.): Yongfu and Sufen start a cigarette business together, then move into clothing. Yongfu, still restless, is lured into a risky trading company by the swindler Wei Baohua. Meanwhile, Yongfu’s sister reveals that Sufen’s pregnancy was fake. Feeling betrayed, Yongfu distances himself from Sufen, and the couple separates.
- Act 3: Rebuilding & The Rise of Real Estate (Episodes 17-24 approx.): Yongfu and Sufen reconcile and open a boutique clothing store together. They marry and have a son. Yongfu profits from stocks and invests in real estate. His ambition clashes with Sufen’s cautious nature, but together they begin to build a property business.
- Act 4: Final Trials & A Hard-Won Reunion (Episodes 25-30): Yongfu is swindled again and loses everything. Sufen’s company faces bankruptcy after being cheated by Lei Baoqing. Yongfu works with the police to expose the criminal ring, while Sufen receives a last-minute investment to save her company. In the end, the villains are brought to justice, and Yongfu and Sufen, having weathered every storm, decide to remarry.
