Ode to Joy (欢乐颂)

Ode to Joy follows five modern women in their twenties and thirties who live on the 22nd floor of an upscale Shanghai apartment complex called "Ode to Joy." Adapted from A Nai‘s novel of the same name, the series chronicles their intertwined lives—navigating career ambitions, family pressures, romantic relationships, and personal struggles. From an icy high-achieving business executive and a worldly HR manager weighed down by family debt, to a privileged heiress, a naïve yet optimistic young woman, and a diligent recent graduate, each woman comes from a different background. As their initial awkwardness gives way to a deep, supportive sisterhood, they weather crises together and grow more resilient against the backdrop of fast-paced Shanghai life. Following a complete cast overhaul after the second season, the series continues with a new set of five women confronting the same challenges of love, career, and self-discovery

The series spans five seasons with a total of 201 episodes (approx. 45 min each). Seasons 1–2 feature the original ensemble cast, while Seasons 3–5 introduce a completely new group of five women living on the same floor.

• Season 1 (Episodes 1–42): Five strangers from vastly different backgrounds—the brilliant and withdrawn business executive Andy, the "Huaiyang Princess" Fan Shengmei burdened by her family, the feisty heiress Qu Xiaoxiao, the naive and spirited Qiu Yingying, and the gentle, diligent recent graduate Guan Juer—unexpectedly become neighbors. Through a series of escalating tensions—a harrowing elevator breakdown, explosive arguments, financial crises, and romantic humiliations—the women clash intensely before gradually learning to break down their walls, ultimately forming an unbreakable emotional alliance.
• Season 2 (Episodes 43–97 [S2 E1–55]): As life deepens, each woman faces new trials: Andy‘s personal demons resurface as her relationship with Bao Yifan progresses; Fan Shengmei struggles to escape her parasitic family but grows more dependent; Qu Xiaoxiao’s seemingly perfect family begins to crumble; Qiu Yingying‘s earnest romance hits a devastating setback; Guan Juer, for the first time in her life, rebels against her parents by falling for a rebellious rock musician. Despite these seemingly insurmountable hurdles, the women sustain each other through every breakdown and breakthrough, ultimately learning to stand independently while leaning on their sisterhood.
• Season 3 (Episodes 98–130 [S3 E1–33]): A new cast of five women moves onto the 22nd floor. Hotel manager Zhu Zhe struggles against the glass ceiling of her limited education; sharp-tongued Yu Chuhui learns hard lessons about integrity; the well-intentioned but socially tone-deaf He Minhong repeatedly brings disaster through sheer naivety; the mysterious and icy HR specialist Fang Zhiheng conceals a troubled past; and the privileged Ye Zhenzhen finds herself targeted by inexplicable workplace hostility. From mutual suspicion to slowly opened hearts, the group forges a new sisterhood out of shared vulnerability.
• Season 4 (Episodes 131–167 [S4 E1–37]): With trust established, the women face escalating challenges. Ye Zhenzhen‘s romance with Dai Wei entangles her in messy family politics; Fang Zhiheng finally emerges from her traumatic past, revealing a warmer, more vulnerable side; Zhu Zhe faces ruthless suppression from above yet refuses to give up; He Minhong’s well-meaning interference continues to backfire spectacularly, straining every relationship around her. The pressure mounts as each woman is forced to confront her deepest fears and limits.
• Season 5 (Episodes 168–201 [S5 E1–34]): In the final season, every woman reaches a critical crossroads. Fang Zhiheng, after discovering she has a long-lost sister, undergoes a profound personal transformation; Zhu Zhe finally breaks through her career bottleneck through sheer perseverance; He Minhong‘s escalating actions ignite a crisis that threatens to tear the friendship apart; the others must decide where loyalty ends and self-preservation begins. Through every fracture and reconciliation, the five women ultimately discover the true meaning of home and the unbreakable bonds that define them.
