The drama is widely regarded as a heavy adaptation (魔改) of the original novel I Have Three Dragon-Obedient Childhood Friends, with the screenplay differing significantly in character backgrounds, world-building, and narrative focus.
- Character Arc – Female Lead’s Father: In the novel, Nan Yan’s biological father is Shen Chan Zhu Ji Ming (the Divine Penitent Master). The drama changed this to Ying Zewei, the main villain.
- Character Arc – Female Lead’s Cultivation Path: In the novel, Nan Yan is a Buddhist cultivator (佛修) who struggles with the conflict of “abandoning the mortal world yet entering it”. The drama changed her into a “poison doctor” (毒医), removing the Buddhist cultivation theme entirely.
- Plot Restructuring – Female Lead’s Mother: In the novel, Nan Yan’s mother dies within the first few chapters. The drama keeps her alive for a much longer period, making her a central figure in the conspiracy.
- Character Arc – Mu Zhanting (Male Lead 2): In the novel, Mu Zhanting is one of Nan Yan’s three “dragon-obedient” childhood friends. In the drama, he is changed into Ji Yang’s devoted fan and follower, shifting the narrative center from the female lead to the male lead.
- World-building: The novel features a unique “Twelve Immortal Continents” (十二仙洲) setting, with each continent having its own cultivation methods. The drama simplified this world-building significantly.
- Plot Addition: The drama added a romance subplot between Mu Zhanting and Yun Nian that does not exist in the original novel.

She inadvertently forms a “spiritual connection seal” (lingxi yin) with the cold and aloof Emperor Ji Yang (Zhang Linghe), an immortal lord hiding his true identity.
