Plot Overview
Cheng Shaoshang, the daughter of a military general, is left behind as an infant while her parents go off to war. Raised by a scheming aunt and an indifferent grandmother in a rural village, she grows up starved of love and learns to survive by hiding her true intelligence and capabilities. Years later, her mother returns, but the years of estrangement make reconciliation difficult. As Shaoshang is introduced to high society, she crosses paths with three suitors: the enigmatic and ruthless adopted son of the Emperor, General Ling Buyi; the elegant and talented scholar Yuan Shen; and the gentle and honorable aristocrat Lou Yao. As she navigates the complexities of marriage prospects and family reconciliation, she becomes entangled in the mysterious general's dark past and a deep conspiracy that threatens the entire empire.

- Act 2: Romance, Rivalry, and a Family Crisis (Episodes 13-27): Shaoshang becomes entangled in the affairs of the imperial palace, drawing the attention of several noble suitors—Lou Yao, the talented scholar Yuan Shen, and Ling Buyi. As her relationships develop, her family faces accusations of treason and is imprisoned. Shaoshang masterminds their rescue, earning her mother's final respect and catching the Emperor’s favor, who ultimately bestows upon her a prestigious engagement to Ling Buyi.
- Act 3: A Dangerous Truth and a Tragic Separation (Episodes 28-42): The focus shifts to Ling Buyi's past. Now engaged, Shaoshang discovers his true identity: his entire family was massacred, and he has been living under a false identity for years. On the night of their wedding, Ling Buyi abandons her to get bloody revenge, which shatters their relationship. He is sentenced to exile for treason, leading to a painful separation and leaving Shaoshang devastated.
- Act 4: Overcoming Trials and a Hard-Won Reunion (Episodes 43-56): A new crisis emerges on the nation's borders, and only Ling Buyi can stop it. Shaoshang volunteers to assist him, and through their work, they begin to rebuild trust. After a series of life-or-death trials, they resolve the national crisis, reconcile, and a decree is issued for their long-awaited marriage, finally uniting them.
