The drama adapts You Sijie’s original novel while making adjustments for the screen.
- Setting Change: The original novel was set in a架空清朝 (fictional Qing Dynasty) background, while the drama changes the setting to the Ming Dynasty.
- Plot Restructuring: The novel features a more detailed storyline involving the female lead traveling to the border and faking a miscarriage to drive away the male lead. The drama streamlines these subplots to focus more on the investigative partnership.
- Character Arc: The novel’s later chapters were criticized for feeling “rushed” and “clichéd” with the female lead’s behavior becoming somewhat erratic. The drama reworks the final act for a more cohesive resolution.
- Tonal Shift: The novel carries a darker, more melancholic undercurrent despite its humorous moments. The drama is marketed as a “light comedy” (轻喜剧), lightening the overall tone.
Plot Overview
Adapted from You Sijie’s novel of the same name, the story begins on a Mid-Autumn Festival night when the “Fox General” Yuwen Hongce (Wang Xingyue) is ambushed in Sailun Valley and loses his entire army. He goes into hiding, vowing to uncover the truth behind military corruption. That same night, Wen Dingyi (Xu Ruohan), the daughter of a high-ranking official, loses her family after her father is falsely accused of treason. She adopts the alias “Mu Xiaoshu,” disguises herself as a man, and becomes an apprentice to an executioner. Eight years later, Hongce saves Xiaoshu at the execution ground—unaware that he has rescued the daughter of a “traitor,” while she stares at the royal son who destroyed her family. The two join forces to investigate corruption, uncover conspiracies involving counterfeit coins and Udi invaders, and ultimately bring down the court’s corruption network while clearing Wen’s name—falling in love along the way.
