While the series is officially adapted from Pu Songling’s Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio (《聊斋志异》), it significantly restructures the source material. Instead of being a purely faithful adaptation of the original short stories, the drama introduces two original lead characters (the demon hunter and the fox spirit) who serve as a connecting thread throughout the entire series. This “dual-main-characters connecting six anthology units” structure is a major departure from the original novel’s format.
- Original Lead Characters: The drama introduces two completely original lead characters—the demon hunter Xia Feixue and the fox spirit Xi Yue—who do not exist in Pu Songling’s original novel. They serve as the main thread connecting all six units.
- Narrative Structure: Unlike the original novel’s collection of independent short stories, the drama adopts a “dual-main-characters connecting six anthology units” structure, with a continuous overarching storyline throughout all 40 episodes.
- Unit Selection & Combination: The drama selects only six specific tales (The Severed Beauty, Judge Lu, Nie Xiaoqian, Su Qiu, The Prime Minister of Dragons, and Xiao Xie) from the vast collection of over 400 short stories in the original novel, omitting the vast majority of other tales.
- Modernized Themes: While retaining the original’s core spirit of “writing about monsters to write about humans”, the drama incorporates contemporary narrative perspectives and introduces a modern “mutual redemption” arc between the two lead characters.
- Expanded Character Roles: The characters from the original short stories are significantly expanded and developed. For example, the tree demon “Grandma” in the Nie Xiaoqian unit is given a more prominent role and has become a major topic of discussion.
