Plot Overview

The story is set in a fictional ancient world dominated by two rival kingdoms locked in a prolonged, bitter war: Jinxiu (锦绣国) in the south and Susha (夙砂国) in the north. The narrative begins at the height of this conflict, at the decisive battle of Pingling (平陵之战) — a confrontation that will change everything for both kingdoms.

As the Jinxiu army teeters on the brink of defeat, a woman in red appears on the battlefield: Fu Yixiao (付一笑, played by Li Qin), the kingdom's legendary archer and a general known for her deadly precision. With a single shot from her bow, she strikes down Feng Suige (凤随歌, played by Chen Zheyuan), the eldest prince of Susha and its celebrated "Young God of War" — a warrior of unparalleled skill and cold, calculating intelligence. The arrow pierces his chest, turning the tide of battle and securing a dramatic Jinxiu victory.

But Yixiao's triumph is short-lived.

Shortly after her victory, as she returns from the battlefield bathed in glory, an arrow flies from the shadows — fired not from enemy lines, but from within her own ranks. She is betrayed by someone she trusts, shot in the back and sent tumbling off a cliff into the churning waters below.

She survives — barely — and is rescued by the Ling family of Zhengnian Mountain Villa (正念山庄), a reclusive clan of physicians known for their healing arts. But she awakens to find that she has lost everything: her memories, her identity, and even her ability to draw a bow, as her left hand has been gravely wounded.

Meanwhile, Feng Suige survives his near-fatal wound as well, only to find himself hunted by assassins. The kingdom that should have celebrated him is now a nest of vipers, and he soon suspects that the attack at Pingling was not a matter of war but a carefully orchestrated conspiracy — one in which he was meant to die alongside the enemy archer. As he hides and recovers, he arrives at Zhengnian Mountain Villa. There, in a medicinal hot spring, he comes face to face with the woman who nearly killed him — now amnesiac, defenseless, and utterly unaware of their shared past.

Feng Suige recognizes her immediately. He could kill her — she is, after all, his enemy. But he sees an opportunity instead. The conspiracy that tried to kill them both is still unfolding, and Yixiao is the key to finding the mastermind. Without revealing her true past to her, he deceitfully claims her as his concubine, giving her the title "Ning Fei" (宁妃), and takes her back with him to the Susha capital, Yujing City (玉京城).

Initially, their partnership is purely transactional. Feng Suige intends to use her as bait to flush out his would-be assassins, while Yixiao — even without her memories — quickly understands that her survival depends on staying close to a man who is as dangerous as he is enigmatic.

But as they navigate the treacherous currents of court politics, fend off palace assassins, and investigate the conspiracy that spans both kingdoms, something unexpected begins to grow between them. The red-haired archer, stripped of her memory but not her spirit, proves herself to be his equal in wit, courage, and resolve — a true "dual strength" (雙強) pairing where neither overshadows the other.

Together, they uncover a web of corruption that extends from the court of Susha to the throne of Jinxiu, involving powerful ministers, treacherous allies, and a plot to overthrow both kingdoms from within. They face corrupt officials, scheming nobles, and the painful truth that some of the people closest to them are the ones who want them dead.

Their journey is one of mutual discovery — of the conspiracy they were born to unravel, and of the feelings that grow from suspicion to trust, from hatred to love, from enemies to fated hearts.

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide

The 38-episode series follows a three-act structure that reflects the development of both the central romance and the unfolding palace intrigue.

Arc 1: The Arrow and the Fall — Enemies to Reluctant Partners (Episodes 1–12)

Synopsis This arc establishes the inciting incident: the Pingling battle, Yixiao's fatal arrow, her betrayal and fall from the cliff, and her subsequent memory loss. It introduces the fraught dynamics between the two leads and sets up the central mystery driving the plot forward. Key Story Beats

  • The Pingling battle: Jinxiu is on the verge of defeat when Fu Yixiao, the kingdom's most celebrated archer, draws her bow and lands a single, devastating arrow into Feng Suige's chest, turning the tide of war.
  • Yixiao is celebrated as a hero — but her triumph is cut short when she is struck by an arrow from behind, presumably from an ally, and falls from a cliff.
  • She is rescued by the Ling family of Zhengnian Mountain Villa, a family of skilled physicians led by the kind-hearted young healer Ling Xueying (辛凯丽 饰). Yixiao wakes with no memory of who she is or what happened to her.
  • Feng Suige survives his chest wound and begins to suspect that the ambush at Pingling was an inside job — a conspiracy that targeted both himself and his enemy. While on the run from assassins, he arrives at Zhengnian Mountain Villa to recover. He encounters Yixiao at the villa's medicinal hot spring and recognizes her instantly.
  • Instead of killing her, he decides to use her. Claiming she is his concubine "Ning Fei," he takes her to the Susha capital, Yujing City, and keeps her under his watchful eye — partly to protect her as a witness, but mostly to use her as bait to draw out the conspirators.
  • The power dynamic is one of mutual distrust and calculation. Feng Suige tests her constantly, while Yixiao, though memoryless, instinctively resists being manipulated. Their relationship is built on sharp words, veiled threats, and the tense awareness that they are each other's only lifeline.
  • In a particularly charged scene, Yixiao — discovering that Feng Suige has imprisoned her — escapes and, in retaliation, strikes him forty-seven times with a whip, declaring that they are now even. It is from this moment of equalized grievance that their partnership formally begins.
  • They declare their intention to work together, each acknowledging that the conspiracy that nearly killed them is still unfolding, and that neither can survive alone. Thematic Focus: The impossibility of trusting an enemy, and the slow, reluctant discovery that the enemy may be the only person you can trust. This arc emphasizes the visceral tension between attraction and repulsion — a foundation that will give their eventual romance its weight.

Arc 2: Deadly Bargains — Trust Built on Survival (Episodes 13–28)

Synopsis As the investigation into the Pingling conspiracy deepens, Yixiao and Feng Suige begin to learn more about each other — and about themselves. Yixiao's memory slowly returns in fragmented pieces, forcing her to confront the truth of who she was before the fall and who betrayed her. Feng Suige, meanwhile, finds himself increasingly reluctant to treat her as a mere pawn. The second arc is characterized by a slow, simmering burn toward genuine trust, punctuated by intense palace intrigue and the steady unraveling of the conspiracy. Key Story Beats

  • Feng Suige takes Yixiao through the streets of Yujing City, publicly presenting her as his concubine, a calculated move to provoke the conspirators into revealing themselves.
  • Along the way, Yixiao is reunited with her three apprentices — the young women she trained in archery — who come to the villa to see her, providing glimpses of her forgotten past.
  • The investigation reveals the existence of a wide-ranging conspiracy. The masterminds behind the Pingling assassination attempt are revealed to be Consort Zhuang (庄后) and Chancellor Zhuang (庄相) — a powerful mother-son pair within the Susha palace who, together with other allied forces, are plotting to seize control of the throne and, through a web of secret alliances, the Jinxiu throne as well.
  • Yixiao's fall is connected to Xia Jingshi (夏靜石, played by Chen Heyi), the Prince of Zhennan in Jinxiu — a man she once trusted deeply, a "white moonlight" figure from her past who ultimately orchestrated her betrayal and the arrow that sent her over the cliff. Xia Jingshi is also secretly in collusion with Mu Rong Yao (慕容曜, played by Zuo Ye), a Susha noble and former close ally of Feng Suige who has betrayed him for power.
  • As the conspiracy expands, the narrative moves from the investigative intrigue of the first half into broader palace politics. Alliances shift, characters reveal hidden loyalties, and the central question — who is truly on which side? — becomes murkier.
  • Feng Suige's complicated backstory is explored. He is a prince whose mother died when he was young, killed by palace machinations, and whose father — the Emperor — did nothing to protect her. His cold, calculating exterior is revealed to be a mask for a deep well of grief and a burning desire for justice.
  • Yixiao, meanwhile, is no longer merely a "weapon" or a "bait" for Feng Suige. As her memories return, she rediscovers her skill with the bow and her identity as a warrior. The relationship shifts from one-sided dependence toward true partnership.
  • A painful truth emerges: Mu Rong Yao, Feng Suige's closest friend and a man he considered a brother, is the one who leaked military intelligence to the enemy, betraying the Susha army and setting in motion the chain of events that led to the Pingling ambush.
  • Feng Xiyang (凤戏阳, played by Xia Meng), Feng Suige's younger sister and a sheltered princess, is married off to Xia Jingshi in a political alliance arranged by the conspirators. She is sent to the enemy's territory as a pawn — but her journey transforms her from a naive, love-struck girl into a woman capable of wielding power in her own right. By the end of the arc, she emerges as a character of surprising depth and agency.
  • By the arc's midpoint, the romantic tension between Yixiao and Feng Suige becomes undeniable. They are no longer merely allies of convenience — they have seen each other's wounds, faced death together, and begun to care for each other in ways neither expected. Thematic Focus: The slow, earned process of building trust between two people who have every reason to hate each other. The arc explores how survival necessity can give way to genuine regard, and how even the most guarded hearts can be opened through shared vulnerability and shared purpose.

Arc 3: The Reckoning — Truth, Loss, and a New Beginning (Episodes 29–38)

Synopsis All threads converge in the final arc. The conspiracy is fully unmasked, and those responsible are brought to account — but not without devastating costs. The arc delivers the emotional payoff of the series, moving beyond "will they win?" to "what will they lose?" and finally, "what kind of future will they choose?" Key Story Beats

  • The conspiracy is exposed in its entirety. Consort Zhuang, Chancellor Zhuang, and their allies stand revealed as traitors who engineered the Pingling ambush to kill Feng Suige and consolidate power. The truth is devastating: the arrow that struck Yixiao was fired by Xia Jingshi — a man she once trusted completely, who was working with the conspirators to ensure that both she and Feng Suige would die on that battlefield.
  • Xia Jingshi's betrayal is explored in depth. His actions were driven by ambition, a desire for control, and a twisted belief that sacrificing Yixiao was necessary for his goals. The confrontation between Yixiao and Xia Jingshi is emotionally charged — a reckoning between a woman and the man who shattered her past. In their final, fateful encounter, Yixiao draws her bow one last time and fires the arrow that ends him, bringing full circle the story that began with her arrow at Pingling.
  • Mu Rong Yao's betrayal of Feng Suige is also paid off. The two men, once close enough to be mistaken for brothers, confront each other in a scene that underscores the tragedy of ambition overriding loyalty. Mu Rong Yao's choice to betray his friend leads to his eventual downfall, and the confrontation is one of the series' most emotionally devastating sequences.
  • Xia Jingyan (夏静炎, played by Qin Tianyu), the ruler of Jinxiu, emerges as a fascinating figure in the final arc — a "mad emperor" who is both cruel and compelling. His relationship with Feng Xiyang, whom he becomes unexpectedly devoted to, provides one of the most talked-about subplots of the series. By the arc's close, Xia Jingyan's death is rendered with tragic poignancy: he dies not as a villain triumphant, but as a broken man pleading for mercy on behalf of the woman he loves.
  • Feng Suige and Yixiao, having uncovered the full truth and eliminated the conspirators, turn their attention to rebuilding. They share a quiet, intimate moment of recognition — of everything they have survived together, and everything they have become to each other.
  • In the final episodes, Yixiao fully recovers both her memories and her identity, and she and Feng Suige make a life-altering choice: not to remain within the cages of palace politics, but to walk away from the throne and travel the world together, pursuing a shared future beyond the walls of power. Feng Suige, having avenged his mother and stabilized the kingdom, steps back from the throne he was never truly greedy for, choosing instead to follow his heart. He and Yixiao bid farewell to the wars and conspiracies that brought them together and ride off into a world of endless possibility.
  • The series concludes with Yixiao becoming the first foreign queen of Susha — a symbolic resolution that speaks to the mending of the rift between Jinxiu and Susha, and the transformation of two enemies into partners not only in love but in the governance of a kingdom. Thematic Focus: The cost of truth and the meaning of power. The final arc grapples with the question of what is worth sacrificing for justice, and what is worth walking away from for love. It delivers catharsis through the defeat of the villains, but it also insists that true peace — both personal and political — requires not only victory but also the wisdom to know when to stop fighting. In its final moments, the series offers a vision of love as something that does not simply conquer obstacles but transcends the systems that create them.
