Adapted from the novel of the same name by Milan, the story follows Lu Sha, a former foreign trade professional who quits her high-pressure job and moves to Haicheng to reunite with her younger sister, Lu Wei. However, she discovers her sister has been deceived and is left disabled after a car accident. The mastermind behind the tragedy is the mysterious wealthy Jiang family. To uncover the truth and seek revenge, Lu Sha seizes an opportunity when Jiang Zhengbang, the heir of the Jiang family, offers his help, and the two enter into a contractual relationship. Initially a relationship of mutual suspicion and transaction, it gradually deepens as Jiang Zhengbang falls for Lu Sha's resilience and sincerity. As Lu Sha uncovers the truth linking the tragedy to Jiang’s father, she finds herself torn between revenge and her growing feelings, ultimately leading to a heart-wrenching choice.

The series is a short-form drama. While various sources list different episode counts (some noting 73 episodes, others 40 episodes, and some a single "collection"), the narrative can be broadly divided into the following four main story arcs:

• Act 1: The Tragedy & The Contract (Episodes 1–approx. 15): Lu Sha discovers her sister Lu Wei has been deceived, forced to abort her child, and left disabled after a car accident. Desperate for her sister's medical bills, Lu Sha is forced to enter into a six-month contract with Jiang Zhengbang, becoming his lover.
• Act 2: Mutual Suspicion & Hidden Agendas (Episodes approx. 16–30): Lu Sha pretends to be a fragile and innocent woman while secretly investigating her sister's case. Jiang Zhengbang, initially viewing Lu Sha with prejudice as "the same type as her sister," treats her with contempt. The two constantly test each other in a tense push-and-pull.
• Act 3: Unraveling the Truth & Emotional Turmoil (Episodes approx. 31–50): Jiang Zhengbang gradually discovers Lu Sha's resilience and kindness, shifting from respect to deep love. Lu Sha discovers that the tragedy is directly linked to Jiang Zhengbang's father, complicating her feelings for him.
• Act 4: The Breaking Point & The Escape (Episodes approx. 51–73): The relationship collapses under the weight of family conspiracies and old grudges. Lu Sha ultimately breaks down and chooses to leave after her sister commits suicide.
