The drama retains the core "academic rivals to lovers" and "reunion" premise of the novel, but makes notable adjustments to the characters and backstory.
- Character Renaming: The novel’s leads are named Shen Shu and Chen Yingzhong. The drama renames them to Hao Nian (female) and Shen Yan (male).
- Plot Addition: The drama introduces a heavy backstory involving a fatal misunderstanding between their families—in one version, the female lead’s mother is said to have accidentally killed the male lead’s father, and the male lead suffered childhood abuse. This darker family drama is not present in the novel’s lighthearted campus romance synopsis.
- Plot Restructuring: The novel focuses on the graduation summer and the female lead’s active pursuit of the male lead. The drama shifts the timeline to a twelve-year separation and adult reunion, emphasizing “久别重逢” (reunion after long separation) and emotional healing over youthful pursuit.
- Tonal Shift: The novel is a lighthearted campus romance with a straightforward pursuit-and-confession plot. The drama takes on a more mature, “遗憾治愈” (healing regrets) tone, focusing on trauma, reconciliation, and the emotional weight of lost time.
