Adapted from the novel Cheng Ling's Choice, the story centers on Cheng Ling, a woman trapped by her oppressive family upbringing, and Xie Lian, a younger man she meets during a rare rebellious road trip at age 23. After a passionate encounter, she retreats back to her family, marries another man, and later divorces him after his infidelity. Five years later, they reunite professionally—she is now a restrained financial controller, and he is the new company chairman, still carrying a torch for her. The drama follows their journey of reconnection, healing, and self-discovery as Cheng Ling learns to break free from her past and embrace love on her own terms.

• Act 2: A Tense Reunion & Hidden Feelings (Episodes 16–35 approx.): Five years later, Xie Lian, now a seemingly cold and successful chairman, reappears in Cheng Ling's life as her boss. She is now a quiet, unassuming financial controller. The tension is palpable, as Xie Lian’s first words to her are a private memory from their past, exposing his unresolved feelings. He begins to subtly protect her, even as she believes he only loves the carefree girl she used to be, not the "ordinary" person she has become.
• Act 3: Confronting the Past & Forced to Choose (Episodes 36–55 approx.): The series delves into the ongoing emotional tug-of-war. Xie Lian is determined to win her back, but Cheng Ling is held back by her deep-seated insecurities and the demands of her overbearing mother, who even tries to force her into remarrying her ex-husband. • Act 4: Reclaiming Herself & A New Beginning (Episodes 56–71): Cheng Ling finds the courage to break free from her family's grip and stand up for herself. With Xie Lian's unwavering support, she finally chooses him. The story concludes with their heartfelt wedding, resolving the storylines of supporting characters, and a final scene that returns to their first meeting on Highway 318, signifying the completion of their journey and her full transformation.
