The drama is adapted from a novel, but it is widely considered a weaker adaptation that waters down the source material's emotional intensity.
- Plot Deletion: The novel includes a harrowing scene where Luo Jiusheng's mother is assaulted by debt collectors and has explicit photos taken of her—a traumatic event that drives her mother's personality change and Luo's spiral into mental illness. The drama softens or removes this explicit content.
- Plot Deletion: The novel depicts Luo Jiusheng's self-harm and mental breakdowns in graphic detail as she struggles with bipolar disorder. The drama significantly reduces or removes these scenes, leaving the emotional arc feeling "like plain water" to some viewers.
- Pacing & Focus: The novel spends more time on Luo's struggles with debt collectors and her life in the aftermath of her family's collapse. The drama rushes through these plot points, with the final episodes speeding through the resolution.
- Character Arc: The novel portrays Luo Jiusheng's internal turmoil and each of her emotional struggles as evidence of her love for Jiang Jin. The drama simplifies this complexity, making the男主's pursuit appear more one-sided at times.
Plot Overview
Six years ago, high school sweethearts Jiang Huaishi (Wang Yiran) and Luo Jiusheng (Wang Haimin) were torn apart when Luo was forced to break up with him after her mother threatened to take her own life. Jiang Huaishi, who had been seriously injured while protecting her, was left devastated. Six years later, he has reinvented himself as Jiang Jin, a cold and aloof rising star in the scientific research world. Meanwhile, Luo Jiusheng's life has fallen apart: her family went bankrupt, her father committed suicide, her mother was assaulted, and she now suffers from bipolar disorder while working as a teacher by day and a bar singer by night to support her sick mother. When the two unexpectedly reunite, Jiang Jin appears intent on revenge—publicly humiliating her, forcing her to sing, and deliberately injuring himself in front of her. But beneath his cold exterior lies a man who never stopped loving her, and he soon offers her a chance to start over.
