The drama retains the core premise and character framework of the novel but makes significant adjustments to the tone and certain plot details. The adaptation has been described as having “completely broken up and reorganized” the original story, keeping only the broad framework and core elements.

  • Tone & Theme: The novel features significant “strong-arm romance” (强取豪夺) elements. The drama significantly tones down these elements and shifts the focus to female growth and class breakthrough.
  • Character Arc: The novel’s female lead was a transmigrator (a modern soul who reincarnated into the ancient world). The drama removes this transmigration element entirely.
  • Plot Restructuring: The drama completely restructures the novel’s plot, breaking it down and reassembling it while keeping only the core framework. One source notes that the drama retains only about “50% of the essence” of the original novel.
  • Character Arc: The novel’s male lead character has been renamed from Lin Jinlou (林锦楼) in the novel to Lin Jinqi (林锦岐) in the drama.
  • Plot Addition: The drama introduces a stronger “power struggle” (权谋) storyline that runs parallel to the inner-courtyard conflicts, weaving together power struggles, inner-courtyard conflicts, and business warfare into three interlocking plotlines.

Cultural Guide: one of a few things Non-Chinese Viewers Often Misunderstand

--> Nanke asked Lanxiang for Xiaolian’s hand in marriage.

Some non-Chinese viewers might feel that Nanke, without even asking Xiaolian if she liked him, went straight to proposing to her master, which seems overly direct—even abrupt.

Our Explanation:

A few hundred years ago, his behavior was actually considered somewhat not bad.

In the past, if a man and a woman weren't close, it was seen as silly and disrespectful for a man to ask a woman directly, "Do you like me?"

At that time, it was not common for men to approach women directly. Instead, a matchmaker would visit the woman's family and propose marriage.

Even recently, a saying was popular in mainland China: "Any romantic relationship that isn't intended to lead to marriage is nothing but hooliganism."
