The series ends on a tragic and bittersweet note. The main characters are forced to abandon their personal quests for justice to protect the greater good, leading to a deeply unsatisfying conclusion for many viewers. The character Gu Qingzhang meets a particularly tragic end, and the finale was widely criticized as a "disappointing ending" (烂尾). The drama is a very loose adaptation of the novel Zhang Gong An (《张公案》) by Da Feng Gua Guo. The original author herself publicly stated that the drama only保留了 the title and some character names, with the dynasty, setting, and main plot being completely different. Many critics have noted that aside from the character names, the drama has almost no connection to the novel.

  • Protagonist Shift: The original novel's protagonist is Zhang Ping, focusing on his journey from a poor scholar to a high-ranking official. The drama shifts the focus to Lan Jue as the central character, centering the story around his political struggles and personal revenge.
  • Character Relationship: To comply with broadcast regulations, the "brotherhood" (兄弟情) elements between the male leads, which were a significant part of the novel's appeal, were heavily censored and cut from the drama. This resulted in a much more subdued dynamic.
  • Plot & Cases: The drama completely rewrites the plot and cases. The original novel's well-regarded mystery cases are not featured, and the entire storyline was described as being changed beyond recognition.
