A Dream Within a Dream (书卷一梦)
Plot Overview
The series follows Song Xiao Yu (played by Li Yi Tong), a struggling "180th-tier" actress trying to climb her way up the entertainment industry ladder. One day, while reading a script she is about to audition for, she is mysteriously transported into the screenplay's world—a fictional historical romance drama. In this alternate reality, she wakes up as Song Yi Meng, the female lead.
There is just one grave problem: in the original script, the heroine Song Yi Meng is a tragic figure—someone who falls in love with the ruthless and bloodthirsty male lead Nan Heng (played by Liu Yu Ning), only to be used, betrayed, and eventually tortured to death. Realizing her dire fate, Song Xiao Yu decides to do the only thing that makes sense: run. As far away as possible.
But the screenplay world has its own ironclad rules. Every time she tries to change the plot—for example, by marrying the second male lead instead of Nan Heng—she is instantly thrown into an endless loop where she suffers over 108 creative deaths, all completely different and all equally painful. She soon comes to a terrible realization: no matter what she does, the narrative will always, inevitably, push her toward the ruthless male lead and force her to act out every key scene in the screenplay.
What follows is a wild, genre-savvy romance between a terrified "paper person" who just wants to be a couch potato and a cold-blooded "overachiever" who seems determined to drag her through every single death scene. As Song Xiao Yu struggles to survive in this bizarre fictional world, she gradually uncovers the deeper truth: within the screenplay, countless characters are trapped by their own "settings"—some confined to the suffocating walls of imperial palaces, others bound by the strict rules of noble households, some consumed by the pursuit of power, and others dreaming of freedom while shackled by their predetermined roles.
"If there is truly some rule or puppet master behind this world, then the one holding the pen should be me."
This is not merely a battle between the terrified, unambitious Song Xiao Yu and the ruthless, obsessive Nan Heng. It is the battle of every "small self"—every fictional character—fighting against the tyranny of a pre-written fate. And as the line between the scripted world and reality begins to blur, Song Xiao Yu must finally answer the question: Is she merely a character trapped in someone else's dream, or can she seize the pen and become the author of her own story?

Deep Dive: Story Arcs & Episode Guide
The 40-episode series is structured around a transmigration narrative with infinite-loop mechanics, blending rom-com tropes with existential questions about fate and free will. The story is divided into three major arcs.
Arc 1: The Loop — Death, Death, and More Death (Episodes 1–12)
Synopsis Song Xiao Yu, a down-on-her-luck actress, is inexplicably pulled into a screenplay world, becoming its heroine Song Yi Meng. But instead of embracing her new role, she discovers a horrifying spoiler: in the original script, her character is destined to be used, betrayed, and tortured to death by Nan Heng, the story's ruthless and bloodthirsty male lead. Her immediate and desperate solution? Escape at all costs. Yet, every single attempt to run from the plot ends in grotesque failure. When she tries to marry the second male lead and rewrite her romantic fate, the world instantly crashes into an infinite loop, killing her in over one hundred creative and painful ways—burned alive, stabbed, poisoned, drowned, and more, each death cruelly unique. After dying again and again in an endless parade of absurdly violent endings, Song Xiao Yu finally accepts the inescapable truth: the scripted world has its own ironclad rules, and no matter what she does, the narrative will always force her toward the dreaded male lead. Key Story Beats

Arc 2: Surviving the Script — Love or a Lie? (Episodes 13–28)
Synopsis Forced to accept that she cannot escape the narrative's pull, Song Xiao Yu changes tactics: instead of running, she decides to play the game. She will follow the script's major plot points, but she will look for cracks—tiny opportunities to deviate without triggering the system's deadly penalties. As she performs her role as the heroine opposite Nan Heng, however, something unexpected happens: the "cold-blooded," "ruthless," and "heartbreaking" male lead begins to feel surprisingly… human. Underneath his tyrannical exterior, Nan Heng reveals flashes of vulnerability, humor, and even warmth toward her. At the same time, Song Xiao Yu discovers that other characters in the screenplay also harbor a desperate desire to break free from their assigned fates—some trapped in the suffocating confines of imperial palaces, others struggling against the rigid expectations of noble households, and still others chasing dreams of power or love that they are not supposed to want. As Song Xiao Yu and Nan Heng grow closer, she begins to question: is this still just acting, or are her own feelings—and his—becoming real? Key Story Beats

Arc 3: Penning Her Own Destiny — The Final Awakening (Episodes 29–40)
Synopsis As Song Xiao Yu draws closer to the script's tragic ending—the moment when Nan Heng is supposed to betray and destroy her—she faces an impossible choice: follow the predetermined path to its heartbreaking conclusion, or find a way to break the rules entirely. Along the way, she uncovers a stunning truth: the screenplay world is not just an illusion; it is a living, breathing construct, and the "rules" that bind its characters are not as absolute as they seem. Inspired by the characters around her—each fighting their own quiet battles against fate—Song Xiao Yu makes a radical decision: she will stop being a character in someone else's story and become the author of her own. Armed with her knowledge of the original script and her growing understanding of the world's internal logic, she begins to rewrite the ending from within. But changing fate comes at a cost. Will she and Nan Heng find a way to escape the narrative's grip together, or will their love become just another tragedy in a pre-written tragedy?
